With more than a decade of experience in diesel and hybrid electric vehicles, the engineer at Cummins says there are a number of ways to tell them apart.
Cummins has been testing its hybrid-electric trucks since the early 1990s.
The company’s latest model, the C-MAX, is the first truck with a diesel engine.
It’s got the same 4.2-liter V-6 that’s in a number in the electric range.
But it has the Cummins nameplate on it, and it has a 3,200-pound capacity.

And while the Cummens C-Max is the only one to go electric, the company has made some adjustments to the way the trucks are built.
It now has an aluminum block and aluminum frame, while the C100E, a diesel truck, is built entirely out of steel.
“Diesel has a higher coefficient of drag, so it’s not as efficient,” said Cummins chief engineer Mike Mello.
“So that gives us an advantage on the highway.”
But the Cummers trucks are still pretty heavy.
Mello says it takes the trucks longer to charge up when compared to gasoline-powered trucks, which are about 60 to 80 percent efficient.
And if they’re going to be out in the field for long periods of time, Cummins will have to do a lot of work to optimize their charging.
“So if you’re a trucker, you’re going see it as a very expensive option,” Mello said.
“Because the charge times are very long, and they’re not efficient.”

“You get more fuel-economy out of the diesel,” Mella said.
Mello says there’s a lot more to it than that.
There’s a much more advanced engine and a more efficient exhaust system that lets it take advantage of the more efficient combustion process.
There are a lot fewer cylinders, so the engine can take more torque, which makes it more efficient.
Mellon says the Cummin is one of the fastest trucks in the world, and the Cummint’s powertrains are more efficient and lighter than the diesel versions of the trucks.
“We’re really focusing on a lot, especially on our trucks in our core product line,” Mellon said.
“Our diesel is a lot bigger than the CMAX.
So the powertrain is bigger and it’s heavier.
The Cummins engine is more efficient, it’s more efficient in the low end and it delivers better fuel economy,” he said.
But Mello doesn’t think there’s much difference between diesel trucks and electric ones.
“I think they are very similar,” Melli said.
He said Cumminers is focused on making the CMax and C100Es as efficient as possible and getting them to market quickly.
“The Cummis CMAX has the same engine, but we changed the cylinder head,” he explained.
“The Cummison CMAX engine has a different cylinder head.
So it’s a little bit different, but it’s the same.
And so we’re trying to get the Cmax truck to market and get it in the trucking industry as quickly as possible.”
It’s a big difference between electric and diesel, but the Cummis trucks are already a huge hit in the market.
